A unique global tool portfolio for the machining of light metals

03. December 2024

Walter expands product range in the lightweight segment and strengthens its global presence:

Lightweight materials are becoming increasingly important in industrial manufacturing. Especially in the automotive and aerospace sectors, the principle is clear: the lighter the weight, the lower the energy consumption – a crucial factor, as it not only positively impacts economic efficiency but also reduces CO2 emissions and increases the range of electric vehicles, for example.

In this context, Walter has expanded its product range and expertise in the lightweight sector, which has grown over more than 20 years – including through the acquisition of the manufacturer FMT (Frezite Metal Tooling). As a result, Walter FMT now offers an extensive portfolio of tools for aluminum processing.

The same applies to the PKD portfolio for processing lightweight materials such as aluminum and aluminum alloys.
Customized Process Solutions

"PKD tools are around 98 percent custom-made, which we tailor to the specific requirements and applications of each customer," explains Roland Hanischdörfer, Field Business Developer PKD at Walter. "In other words, we develop customized machining solutions together with our customers. The vast experience of Walter FMT in the lightweight sector benefits both us and our clients." For example, each wing rib reinforcing an aircraft wing is made differently from the next. In the automotive sector, however, particularly high quantities in mass production and short cycle times need to be managed. To meet these very different processing scenarios, Walter FMT’s process solutions are customized and leverage the full potential of both the large standard assortment and the special solutions found in Walter's portfolio.

High Requirements for Machining and Tools

Such high-tech components impose particularly high demands on the machining process and the tools used. "For example, aluminum materials with a high silicon content are abrasive, while aluminum from the 7000 alloy group can be highly resistant," explains Stefan Benkóczy, Component Manager at Walter. "Other aluminum groups tend to form flowing chips and smearing."

This, along with a variety of different shapes and/or materials, requires flexible machining strategies and tools. Challenges to which Walter responds with its extensive standard tool portfolio, PKD special tools, and expertise, providing precisely tailored solutions.

New Solutions for the Automotive Industry

New additions to Walter’s PKD portfolio for the automotive industry include tools for processing chassis components – an area in which the company has significant experience and expertise. Of course, Walter also supports the development of electromobility, for example, with tools for processing stator housings, the outer casing of electric motors.

In total, the current product range from Walter in the field of lightweight metal cutting includes around 12,000 different standard tools. Additionally, special PKD and carbide tools, as well as hybrid variants, reflect the solution expertise of Walter’s PKD and lightweight specialists. All these tools are characterized by high cost-effectiveness, thanks to short processing times and exceptionally high tool life.

Strengthened Global Presence

In addition to expanding its PKD product range, Walter has also increased the number of its production and service sites and regrinding centers – including in Eastern Europe and Central America. As a result, the company makes its services and products even more readily and quickly available worldwide.
