Insights into innovative production processes

24. October 2024

Two weeks before the start of the new World Cup season in Sölden, the Alpine Sports Director Herbert Mandl, the head coaches of the men's and women's teams Roland Assinger and Marko Pfeifer, as well as the head of the service technicians Christian Greber, did not miss the opportunity to pay a visit to Tyrolit, long-time ÖSV sponsor and technology partner of the Austrian Ski Association.

We all know them - the caps and hats with the blue logo on the heads of the ÖSV trainers and service technicians. After many years of good and close cooperation, it was time for the ÖSV squad to take a look behind the scenes at the Tyrolit site in Schwaz.

During a factory tour with Michael Weis, Head of Corporate Communication at Tyrolit, the trainers experienced the production of cut-off wheels and grinding tools at first hand - from the ideal composition and mixture of the different “abrasive grains” to “baking” in the large ovens. Pfeifer & Co. was particularly interested in the production of the abrasives used for the base grinding of racing skis.

Following a series of photos and interviews for the “Tyrolit Coaches Talk”, board members Thomas Friess and Matthias Kuprian took the opportunity to talk personally about the progress and current status of preparations for the upcoming World Cup season.

Thomas Friess, CEO Tyrolit: Tyrolit and the Austrian Ski Association have a long-standing partnership that goes far beyond a classic sponsor relationship. Business and top-class sport have many parallels - it's about trust, courage, commitment and, above all, passion. We are delighted to welcome the ÖSV coaches and wish them a good, successful and above all injury-free season!

Matthias Kuprian, Tyrolit board member: “We are very proud of this partnership - also in the knowledge that the ÖSV athletes are competing on skis that have been processed with our Tyrolit products and with which many gold medals have already been won at the Olympics. I myself sit in front of the TV at many races and cheer them on. All the best for the coming season!

Herbert Mandl, Sports Director Alpine ÖSV: “It is extremely important for every association to have good partners at its side. With Tyrolit, we have that at all levels. Their know-how, expertise and products in the area of surface treatment of edges and racing surfaces benefit not only our athletes, but all active winter sportsmen and women. It was fascinating today to see how the manufacturing processes work here.

Marco Pfeifer, ÖSV Head Coach Men's Alpine: “Personally, I now have a completely different relationship with my Tyrolit cap. I would never have imagined how complex the production of the whetstones is and how much manual work is involved.

Christian Greber, ÖSV Head of Service: “Our service staff deal with the subject of sharpening on a daily basis. But it's something completely different when you see the science that goes into the grinding tools for structuring the ski bases alone. It was also exciting for me to find out how different compositions and manufacturing processes affect the end result on the ski bases.
