Bespoke PCD tooling solution for the aerospace industry

08. October 2026

Precision and process reliability in the machining of CFRP and aluminium

The demands placed on modern cutting tools in the aerospace industry are high: a variety of materials, complex component geometries and the highest quality standards require specially tailored tool designs. The YG-1 Technology Centre in Oberkochen develops bespoke tool solutions for this purpose, which are precisely tailored to the specific machining task.
One example is the in-house developed PCD compression router for machining carbon fibre-reinforced plastics (CFRP). The tool design was specifically engineered to enable high-quality machining and to minimise the typical challenges associated with machining fibre-reinforced composites.

Innovative cutting edge geometry for high-quality machining results

A key feature of the tool is its special compression geometry. The right- and left-handed PCD cutting edges reduce fraying of the material surface. This is particularly important when machining CFRP, as a clean cut edge is crucial for component quality.

In addition, chip breakers have been precisely integrated into the cutting edges using laser technology. They support controlled chip formation and help to adapt the machining process to the specific requirements of the material.

Another design feature is the centre-cutting configuration. This makes the PCD Compression Router suitable for a wide range of machining strategies, including plunge cutting, ramping, edge milling and full-groove milling. The tool thus offers a high degree of flexibility for complex machining tasks and a variety of milling operations.

Customised solutions from Oberkochen

Through a combination of PCD cutting material, innovative compression geometry and laser-assisted chip breakers, the YG-1 Technology Centre demonstrates how application-specific tool development can help tackle demanding machining tasks.

The development of bespoke special-purpose tools makes it possible to tailor tool geometry and machining strategies specifically to the requirements of modern manufacturing processes. Alongside CFRP, aluminium is also one of the key materials used in the aerospace sector.

The result: a bespoke tooling solution designed for precise cutting edges, versatile applications and the specific requirements of the aerospace industry.
