PCD milling program for aluminium machining
Tübingen// With over 30 years of experience in the development and production of precision tools with high-hardness cutting materials, Paul Horn GmbH in Tübingen presented an extensive PCD milling program for productive aluminium machining at AMB 2024 in Stuttgart. During this time, Horn has proven itself in numerous industries - and has thus become an important partner in the field of PCD tools. The new PCD milling program is part of this long-standing development and complements the portfolio. Based on market experience and customer requirements, Horn has developed a complete standard range of milling tools.
The standard range of the DM 20 to DM 90 series stands in its diversity for the reliable machining of aluminum, non-ferrous metals and technical plastics. With a focus on conserving resources, coordinated cutting lengths and tool designs, the tools are available from stock.
With this product range, Horn offers a wide range of standard and special tools, from simple PCD end mills to complex and modular combination tools. As a driving force, the focus is on economically sophisticated solutions with high productivity, combined with Horn technology, high flexibility and reliability. The Horn high-performance PCD cutting material is made up of a sophisticated mixture of diamond grains of different sizes. The volume percentage of diamond increases, as do the effective hardness, toughness and cutting edge quality. Strict quality standards and their control are a matter of course and ensure strong performance.
Machining aluminum
The tensile strength, elongation, hardness and strength of aluminum can be influenced by alloying elements such as silicon, magnesium, copper, zinc and manganese. The material can become soft during machining due to the heat development, stick to the cutting tool and even destroy it due to the disturbed chip flow. It is therefore important that the material and cutting parameters are properly matched. It depends on the aluminum alloy, the cutting tool, the feed rate and speed as well as the type and quantity of cooling lubricant.
Aluminum - a versatile material that is used in all economic sectors. Supplemented by the new PCD milling range, Horn offers a broad portfolio of optimized tools for the economical machining of this light metal.
Horn tools for machining aluminum
The most important features of the wide Horn range of standard and special tools are special chip form geometries with sharp cutting edges, polished cutting surfaces and coatings with very good sliding properties due to the strong adhesion tendency of aluminum. Carbide cutting inserts for grooving are also given a peripheral grinding to ensure an extremely sharp cutting edge. For aluminum alloys with a high silicon content, the inserts are coated. The portfolio includes coated and uncoated circular tools and solid carbide milling cutters for milling. Due to the large chip volume based on high cutting data, single-edged milling cutters with a large chip space are also available. High-hardness cutting materials such as PCD and CVD-D with precision-lasered cutting edges are available for a long service life or more complex work. MCD-tipped tools are used, for example, for high-gloss machining of mirrors or aluminum blow molds.
