SUMIDIA™ DA1090 – New PCD grade sets new standards in wear and fracture resistance

20. January 2026

Willich, January 2026 – With SUMIDIA™ DA1090, Sumitomo introduces a newly developed PCD grade that has been specially designed for demanding machining processes under high loads. The basis for this development is sintered polycrystalline diamond (PCD), which is produced by sintering diamond – the hardest known material – with a binder under high pressure and high temperature.

SUMIDIA™ DA1090

SUMIDIA™ DA1090 can be used in a variety of ways as a tool material, for example for machining aluminium alloys, hard and brittle materials, carbides or composite materials, such as those found in the automotive industry.

Cutting edges are subjected to enormous stress, particularly in machining processes such as milling or turning. Increasing industrial demands therefore require tool materials with even higher wear resistance and fracture toughness.

With the new PCD grade SUMIDIA™ DA1090, Sumitomo is responding specifically to these challenges: the material offers an optimal balance of wear and fracture resistance, enabling stable and reliable machining processes even under high loads.

"With SUMIDIA™ DA1090, Sumitomo is expanding its portfolio with a high-performance solution for modern machining requirements. Customers benefit from longer tool life, greater process reliability and outstanding performance even under extreme operating conditions.
