Full hardness against wear

28. February 2024

Walter is one of the leading providers of precision tools for metalworking worldwide. With the patented Tiger·tec Gold grade WSM33G, the company once again proves this. The WSM33G is the first Walter PVD grade specifically developed for the high demands of grooving.

The cutting material combines third-generation TiAlN and TiSiN to form a multi-layered coating with exceptional hardness, while simultaneously increasing toughness. A special post-treatment reduces friction, ensuring a smooth surface and optimizing chip evacuation and process security. The golden top layer also facilitates wear detection by the user. Walter utilizes the new PVD coating on both single-edged SX cutting inserts with positive locking and self-clamping, as well as on indexable inserts of the double-edged DX18 system, where a second prism ensures stability in the insert seat.

For users, the compatibility with both systems means maximum versatility, covering all cutting widths between 1.0 and 10 mm. Another advantage of the Tiger·tec Gold grade WSM33G is its adaptability, even under demanding conditions. This universal grade is suitable for 75 percent of all applications: grooving, parting-off, turning, or slot milling – whether in steel (ISO P30), stainless steel (ISO M30), or difficult-to-machine materials (ISO S30). The universal applicability, combined with the high tool life and resistance of the multi-layered coating against plastic deformation and flank wear, make WSM33G cutting inserts a highly productive and process-secure choice.
