30 years of CERATONIA: Moving into the future with the next generation
What began as a bold start-up idea has grown into an internationally recognised and highly regarded specialist in diamond and CBN cutting materials. In this anniversary year, CERATONIA is also setting the course for the future: Adrian and Laurence Dümpert are taking over the reins and carrying their father Reiner Dümpert’s life’s work into the next generation.
An anniversary looking to the future
What began back then with a wealth of expertise, personal dedication and a clear vision is now an established company based in Ebelsbach, Lower Franconia. Since its foundation in June 1996, the company has developed from a one-man business into an internationally active, independent supplier and service provider of ultra-hard cutting materials.
The 30th anniversary therefore marks far more than just a milestone. It bridges the past and the future. Founder Reiner Dümpert (Graduate Engineer in Mechanical Engineering, University of Applied Sciences) built up CERATONIA, played an active role in shaping the market for new cutting materials and created a corporate culture in which quality, a reliable team spirit and personalised advice set the standard. Now his sons, Adrian and Laurence Dümpert, are taking over responsibility for the further development of the family business.
From a fresh start to a brand of his own
CERATONIA’s journey began during a period of price fluctuations that offered anything but ideal conditions for starting a business. Reiner Dümpert, a mechanical engineer with experience in international sales, had already been working in the diamond and CBN raw materials sector for a good six years, since 1989. When a wave of redundancies at his employer at the time in 1995 also affected him, what was a career setback turned into an entrepreneurial opportunity for which he remains grateful to this day. Consequently, the concept for his own business took shape in his parents’ loft. CERATONIA was founded in June 1996.
The early years were characterised by diversity and personal commitment. Initially, everything from customer liaison, purchasing, quality control, bookkeeping, dispatch and technical consultancy was handled by a single person. Parcels were often quickly taken to the post office by bicycle, whilst international supply relationships were being established in parallel. From these humble beginnings, the company gradually developed, step by step, into a continuously growing business that today supplies both regionally based and globally active medium-sized tool manufacturers.
The company name is derived from the carob tree (Latin: ‘Ceratonia siliqua’). For centuries, its seeds were used as a standard for weighing gemstones and are regarded as the origin of the unit of weight known as the carat.
New ideas emerge where responsibility meets passion
Following his apprenticeship as a wholesale and foreign trade clerk and further training in quality management, Laurence Dümpert took on responsibility within the family business at an early stage. Today, he combines commercial and technical expertise with a clear focus on customer service, quality and modern business management.
People are at the heart of his work – customers as well as staff. His aim is to find the best possible solution for both sides and to create an environment in which trust,
motivation and reliability are a given. For him, it is precisely this combination that defines a company’s success.
He is particularly driven by immediate feedback: satisfied customers who have received prompt and expert support, or staff who are proud of their company. For him, CERATONIA is more than just a place of work – it is a community characterised by collaboration and mutual respect.
In his private life, too, he values variety: good food and cooking, high-performance cars and – more recently – golf. In all this, he remains true to his motto:
“Seize opportunities, gain
experience and consciously
enjoy life – because the right
moment is often right now.”

Pioneering work in CVD diamond
A key factor in the company’s growth was CVD thick-film diamond, which had only recently become commercially available at the time. When Reiner Dümpert first saw these free-standing CVD diamond blanks at the US manufacturer Norton in 1997, he recognised early on the potential of this cutting material, which was still completely unknown at the time. CERATONIA spearheaded the European market launch and, as early as 1998, held seminars for tool manufacturers to demonstrate the possibilities this cutting material offered in tools for dressing and machining. For this pioneering achievement, the young company founder was awarded the ‘Norton Pioneers Award’ as early as 1998.
The real challenge began when Norton suddenly ceased production after the turn of the millennium due to excessively high production costs. CERATONIA now had to identify alternative and reliable sources of supply, whilst at the same time communicating the processes by which CVD diamond could be reliably used in tools on an industrial scale. Unlike PCD, this cutting material could not be machined using erosion. Furthermore, suitable laser technology and methods for safe vacuum brazing were still in their infancy. Consequently, as early as autumn 1998, the company presented tool manufacturers with a laser from LaserPluss, which subsequently led to a collaboration for its marketing.
CERATONIA collaborated with tool and machine manufacturers as well as research institutions such as the Fraunhofer Institute for Thin Film and Surface Technology (IST) in Braunschweig and the IWF at the Technical University of Berlin. Within the industry working group, laser machining was further developed at the IWF at the Technical University of Berlin in collaboration with the institutes, tool manufacturers and the laser manufacturer. This led to the development of practical machining strategies.
CERATONIA also provided key impetus for the adaptive further development of the early vacuum brazing systems and acted as the representative for a German manufacturer for several years. What began as a cutting-edge innovation that was difficult to access thus evolved into an established and practical solution for tool manufacturers. The CVD thick-film diamond product families – Ceraton-CVD for cutting tools and Ceradress-CVD for dressing tools – continue to embody this pioneering spirit to this day.
Quality stems from selection and process expertise
CERATONIA sees itself as an independent European supplier and selects materials from various manufacturers qualified for the respective product type. These are critically assessed against clearly defined standards and, depending on the product, either processed to suit the specific application or fabricated to customer specifications using the company’s own laser equipment. This independence forms an essential part of the business model. The focus is not on the range offered by a single manufacturer, but on selecting the cutting material best suited to the specific application, one that reliably meets customer requirements.
The product and service portfolio comprises natural and synthetic diamond abrasives, diamond micron powder, coated abrasives, cubic boron nitride (CBN), synthetic monocrystalline stones and plates (so-called blanks), as well as polycrystalline diamond (PCD), polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (pCBN) and CVD diamond. These materials are used, amongst other things, for grinding, dressing, honing, lapping, polishing and machining, and are utilised by customers in the metal, wood, glass, ceramics, construction and natural stone processing sectors, as well as in specialised toolmaking, medical technology and the semiconductor industry – a forward-looking market with increasing demands for high-precision material solutions.
The range of cutting materials is complemented by bespoke services. Using its own laser systems, CERATONIA produces precise blanks from polycrystalline cutting materials (PKD and CVD) and responds flexibly to special geometries, extremely small dimensions (including 0.3 mm) and short-notice orders. Diamond and CBN grit sizes are cleaned, sieved and sorted by shape depending on the application. State-of-the-art measuring equipment and digital microscopes support quality control, even for the finest micro-grains and the smallest components. A documented quality management system in accordance with ISO 9001:2015 ensures reproducible processes. Quality assurance, as well as production and laser processes, are overseen and continuously developed by Bogdan Cîrlan, Head of Quality Management.
Particularly with ultra-hard cutting materials, it is not just the nominal product specification that matters. Grain shape, strength, purity, tolerance, cutting material structure and finish must be suited to the tool and the subsequent process. Through expert advice, forward-looking stock management and reliable delivery capabilities, the company supports its customers in ensuring consistent tool quality, high process reliability and a stable supply, even in economically and geopolitically challenging times.
Growth through close collaboration
As business relationships continued to expand, so too did CERATONIA. The office that had once been based in the family home gradually gave way to additional workspaces and technical facilities. When the available space was finally exhausted, the next logical step followed: in 2014, CERATONIA moved into its company premises in Ebelsbach, offering more than 500 square metres of office, production and technical space.
Despite the growth of recent years, CERATONIA has retained its short communication channels and high level of flexibility. Clear processes, swift decision-making and a reliable organisational structure ensure that customers can rely on consistent quality and reliable delivery – even in the face of increasing demands and dynamic markets. This development is significantly supported by Office Manager Christoph Strätz, who lays the organisational foundations for efficient workflows by further developing the ELO and SAP systems landscape and optimising internal processes.
At the same time, a culture of personal responsibility and collaborative thinking characterises the company. Reiner Dümpert has always viewed CERATONIA as a collective endeavour. “Innovations arise where customer requirements, practical experience and technical knowledge from production, science and mechanical engineering come together.” Thus, what began as a raw materials supplier has evolved into an engineering and solutions partner that takes a holistic view of materials, machining and application.
Some careers do not come about by chance, but stem from a desire to always think one step ahead
From an early age, he was fascinated by technology and analytical thinking. Following his apprenticeship as an IT specialist in application development at a company that manufactures medical products, he was taken on permanently straight away. However, he soon realised that his path would continue within his father’s company and extend beyond pure development. He wanted to understand technical interrelationships, create new solutions and shape innovations. The developer became an entrepreneur who today shapes the technological and strategic development of CERATONIA.
A particular focus of his work lies in the future potential of diamond materials. As the capabilities of AI and high-performance computers increase, so does the challenge of efficiently dissipating the heat generated. It is precisely here that Adrian Dümpert sees great potential and is developing solutions to harness diamond for the key technologies of tomorrow.
His thinking is characterised by curiosity and foresight. He does not seek simple answers, but rather the best solutions to complex challenges. His personal motto sums up this attitude:
“Those who take pleasure in working on
tomorrow’s solutions today
are not only improving the future,
but also making a difference to the present.”

Adrian and Laurence: Responsibility born of experience
Preparations for the generational handover did not begin only in the run-up to the company’s anniversary. Adrian and Laurence Dümpert have been involved in the family business from a young age and have come to know CERATONIA from various perspectives. As a result, both have taken on their own specialist areas: Adrian played a key role in the market launch of large-format PCD discs and has continued to build on his expertise in polycrystalline cutting materials and digital solutions. Today, he is driving forward the development of new diamond applications – from precision machining to future technologies in the semiconductor industry. In Customer Service, he is supported by Lisa Hümmer and Sabine Zenglein, who bring their many years of experience in the field of poly- and monocrystalline cutting materials to their day-to-day customer support.
Laurence took on numerous administrative tasks at an early stage and – alongside gaining initial experience with laser systems – drove forward the development of new diamond grit products. His expertise lies particularly in the field of grit and powder: new grit types, different blends, and shape sorting. He is supported in Customer Service by Lisa Langhans, whose many years’ experience in the field of diamond and CBN grits is a valuable asset to customer support.
Today, both work in technical sales and lead key product areas: Adrian as Head of Poly, Laurence as Head of Grit. They thus represent the two cornerstones of the portfolio – polycrystalline cutting materials on the one hand, and diamond and CBN abrasives on the other. Together with Head of Sales Christopher Löhner, they form the sales interface with international customers and ensure that technical expertise and individual requirements are successfully brought together.
This in-depth practical knowledge also forms the foundation for the company’s succession. The next generation is not taking over a finished legacy merely to be preserved, but a vibrant company operating in a market that is constantly changing due to new materials, increasing demands for precision, digitised manufacturing processes, more complex supply chains and growing cost pressures. Adrian and Laurence can draw on three decades of accumulated experience, a skilled team and a strong foundation that Reiner Dümpert has built up over the years. This knowledge, the network of contacts that has developed over time and the entrepreneurial experience form the basis for the next phase of CERATONIA’s development. At the same time, Adrian and Laurence are driving the company’s further development forward with technological foresight, new applications and innovative solutions.
Reiner Dümpert remains a key figure, drawing on his comprehensive knowledge of the market and products. His knowledge, contacts and experience are being passed on in a targeted manner, whilst Adrian and Laurence are increasingly taking on responsibility for operational and strategic decisions. As such, succession at CERATONIA is not viewed as a one-off transition, but is being prepared as a continuous process – in a practical manner and in close consultation with the teams from Customer Satisfaction, Sales and Quality Assurance.
Continuity is more than just standing still
For customers and partners, the generational transition means one thing above all else: reliability. CERATONIA remains an independent, owner-managed family business offering personalised advice, short decision-making processes and a clear commitment to quality. At the same time, the next generation is opening up new horizons. The combination of decades of experience and a modern perspective on technologies, digital processes and international markets lays the foundation for the years ahead.
After all, the demands placed on the industry are also changing. Volatile raw material markets, complex supply chains and increasing demands for precision and bespoke solutions call for partners who can react quickly whilst also bringing a deep technical understanding to the table. CERATONIA meets these challenges with a strength that has characterised the company since 1996: its knowledge of materials, applications and its customers’ processes.
It is precisely this understanding that makes the difference. Successful cutting tool solutions do not arise solely from selecting the right material. The interplay between material, tool, machining process and application is crucial. This knowledge has been built up over decades through numerous customer projects, technical challenges and continuous engagement with diamond and CBN materials. It combines practical experience with technical understanding and now forms the basis for translating even complex requirements into targeted, high-performance solutions.
Thus, even after 30 years, CERATONIA stands for more than just the reliable supply of high-quality diamond and CBN cutting materials: it stands for technical expertise, collaborative partnerships and solutions that make customers more successful in the long term.
In keeping with our own standards:
Quality diamond for brilliant tools.
