One of the dolphins in the shark tank
How Demant turns precision, partnership and attitude into the keys to success
For over seven decades, DEMANT AG, based in Düdingen (CH), has been synonymous with the highest precision in diamond tool manufacturing. Founded in 1952, this owner-managed family business has consistently positioned itself as a specialist in monocrystalline and polycrystalline diamond tools. What sets Demant apart is not merely technological excellence, but a clear philosophy: Sustainable growth, a partnership-based approach and a conscious focus on quality rather than quantity.
This philosophy is aptly described by this year’s company motto, which originated from an internal anecdote: “The dolphin in the shark tank.” A symbol of agility, intelligence and team spirit in a demanding, highly competitive environment.
Yves Grandjean grew up in the canton of Fribourg and developed a passion for technology and mechanics at an early age. After training as a polymechanic, he specialised in the overhaul of milling and turning machines and expanded his expertise through training in diamond grinding and further technical and commercial education. Today, he applies his experience specifically to the digitalisation and optimisation of production processes. He particularly values finding creative solutions to technical challenges and working as part of a team.
Tailor-made precision as a principle
DEMANT AG’s product portfolio comprises MKD and PKD tools, with a clear focus on bespoke solutions. For the company, standardisation is not an end in itself – rather, Demant sees itself as a development partner for demanding applications. The custom-designed tools are used particularly where the highest precision, process reliability and surface finish are required.
This specialisation is also reflected in the target sectors: alongside the long-established watch and jewellery industry, key application areas include medical technology, optics, precision engineering, plastics processing and the electrical industry.
Investing in quality, not speed
Last year, Demant made targeted investments in expanding its own capabilities. The team was expanded by four new employees – a deliberate step to ensure further growth in a structured and quality-oriented manner. At the same time, the diamond grinding workshop underwent a comprehensive expansion: Additional grinding tables, new measuring equipment and various new grinding collets increase vertical integration and enhance process stability.
Looking ahead, the investment strategy remains clearly defined. Over the next two years, the focus will once again be on new machinery designed to raise the already high quality standards even further. Particular emphasis will be placed on high-precision radius tools, especially for optical applications and new markets.
Digitalisation with a sense of proportion
Since the start of this year, Demant has had an online catalogue with an integrated ordering function. The first products are already available, and the catalogue is being continuously expanded. The company does not view this digital expansion of its offering as a move away from bespoke project work, but rather as a useful addition that enhances customer engagement and transparency.
At the same time, the company remains realistic in its approach to new technologies. Artificial intelligence is viewed as an exciting topic for the future, but the key factor for success remains human intelligence – particularly when it comes to customer-specific advice, response times and technical communication.
Partnerships rather than short-term maximisation
A key element of the company’s strategy is a deliberate approach to growth. Demant focuses specifically on long-term partnerships with customers and suppliers and aims to avoid external financing wherever possible. This strategy sometimes means that projects or requests are spread out over time. However, the key is to maintain our own stability and remain a reliable partner even during challenging market phases.
Particularly in an environment characterised by intense price pressure and increasing complexity, Demant does not see itself as an aggressive market player, but rather as a reliable specialist with substance.
Internationally networked, open to new ideas
Over the past year, the company has established numerous new international contacts. The professional exchange of technology, processes and ideas is deliberately viewed as a learning opportunity. The focus has recently been on transatlantic contacts; in the coming years, there are plans to step up transpacific activities.
Germany plays a special role in this regard. Manufacturers there impress with their high capacities and cutting-edge technology – an environment that Demant perceives as inspiring and trend-setting.
Corporate culture as a competitive advantage
Another key factor in our success lies in our internal organisation. At the end of the year, we once again held staff appraisals – this time adopting a deliberately open approach. Instead of pre-set lists of targets, the team defined their own individual goals. The result: a high level of identification, strong motivation and a noticeable boost in internal optimisation. Here, too, the image of the dolphin in the shark tank comes to mind: alert, agile, collaborative – and always on the move.
Precision with a vision
The future of DEMANT AG clearly lies in high-precision grinding and laser processing. With a stable team, clear investment goals and a consistent focus on partnership, the company sees itself as well-equipped for the challenges ahead. Not growth at any price, but technological excellence, reliability and a passion for one’s work form the basis for the next stage of development.
Or, as it is put internally: The dolphin does not swim against the market – it uses its currents.
